They feature Corning�s multimode fibers: which are rated to reach 300 meters and 600 meters respectively at 1 Gigabit per second at the short wavelength (850 nanometer). The regular (FDDI grade) 62.5/125 micron fiber is limited to 220 m (722 ft.) at that wavelength and the regular 50/125 micron is limited to 550 m (1210 ft.). These fibers have been optimized for Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL) which are used in the 1 Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Base SX).The current bandwidth measurement technique is based on LED type launching condition which becomes irrelevant when referring to 1 Gigabit Systems.
